POKHARA, Aug 9: Kaski District Police Office has taken 20 people into custody and launched further investigations as part of a “sweep operation” carried out at various locations in Pokhara Metropolitan City on Friday night.
Police launched the operation in Kaski a few months ago to crack down on illegal activities, hooliganism and acts that disturb public peace and security.
Three dozen arrested in police's sweep operation
Police teams deployed from the district police office and its subordinate units detained the individuals from Prithvi Chowk, Sabhagriha Chowk, Srijana Chowk and the Lakeside area. They were accused of creating disturbances after consuming alcohol, engaging in unwanted activities after using marijuana and other drugs, and harassing members of the public and tourists.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Birendra Kumar Paswan said those found consuming alcohol or marijuana related substances are generally counselled and handed over to their parents or guardians.
However, individuals with a criminal background, repeat offenders and those who misbehave with police during checks face formal charges and legal action through the courts, he said.
Police said the sweep operation is being carried out to curb criminal activities and maintain peace and security.
