PM vote to be futile again

KATHMANDU, Sept 30: Barring a miracle at the eleventh hour, parliament is set to witness yet another fiasco, as it prepares to go for a ninth round of voting on Thursday to elect a new prime minister.

Parliament will fail to elect a successor to Madhav Kumar Nepal as the efforts of the UCPN (Maoist) and CPN-UML to persuade the Nepali Congress (NC) to withdraw its candidacy for prime minister and start the election process afresh failed to make any headway.[break]

“Nepali Congress has decided not to withdraw its candidacy and the Speaker is also not likely to allow an amendment to the existing regulations. So the Speaker will hold the vote and we will boycott it,” said Maoist Vice-chair Narayan Kaji Shrestha.

With the Maoist decision to withdraw its candidacy for prime minister, NC parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Poudel is now the lone candidate in the prime ministerial race.

While the UML has already announced it will not take part in the voting until a new process for electing the prime minister begins, Madhes-based parties have been choosing to stay neutral in all the rounds of voting.
