KATHMANDU, March 31: Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has urged the opposition alliance to seek solution to the existing political deadlock through talks.

Addressing the 17th anniversary of the Reporters Club Nepal in the capital on Tuesday, Koirala said he is in favor of seeking a solution to the existing political deadlock through negotiations.

"This is not the time for confrontation. We all should stand united to seek a solution," said Koirala.

Chairman of the Constituent Assembly (CA) Subas Nembang expressed hope that both the ruling and opposition alliance would reach consensus before the CA meeting scheduled for April 6.

"If there is enough political will I have given the political parties enough time for consensus before the next CA meeting," he said.

Speaking at the same program, UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal had warned of grave consequences if the ruling parties move ahead with the majority process for drafting the new constitution. He also accused the ruling parties of ignoring past agreements and the mandate of past movements.

CPN-UML senior leaders Jhalnath Khanal and Madhav Nepal stressed on making the best possible efforts for consensus but argued that the CA cannot wait indefinitely for consensus. "If there is no consensus with the opposition alliance, we will try to seek adequate consensus," said Khanal. Nepal, however, proposed that the new constitution should be delivered by mid-May even if the issues related to federalism are put to further deliberation.

Chairman of the election government Khil Raj Regmi said no leader could escape from the duty of delivering a new constitution.

Chairman of Madhesi Peoples' Rights Forum-Democratic (MPRF-D) Bijay Gachchhadar, Madhesi Peoples' Right sForum Nepal (MPRF-N) Upendra Yadav, Shadbhavana Party Chairman Rajendra Mahato, and CPN-Maoist Vice-Chairman CP Gajurel, among others, addressed the function.
