The top post on the crucial CA committee has been vacant ever since then head of the committee Madhav Kumar Nepal became prime minister in May. The Unified CPN(Maoist) and the Nepali Congress (NC) have staked their claims to the post.
Other parties have suggested the UML forge a consensus among the parties over the post, according to Bhim Acharya, chief whip of CPN-UML. "Other party leaders have suggested to us to reach a consensus even with the Maoists if the latter are ready to cooperate with the government and forge a package deal," he said.
The package deal includes ending obstructions of parliament and cooperating in resolving the army integration row, among other issues, he said.
But the NC is adamant in its claim for the post. "We are trying to persuade the NC to be flexible," Acharya said. The prime minister and the UML are yet to talk to the Maoist party.
