PM Oli calls for global unity to address climate change challenge

Addressing the review program of the 29th World Climate Conference organized by the Ministry of Forests and Environment on Thursday, PM Oli emphasized that even those countries in disagreement on other issues must unite and work together to keep the air and nature clean.

KATHMANDU, Dec 26: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that all institutions and individuals at the national and international levels should unite to resolve the challenge of climate change.


Addressing the review program of the 29th World Climate Conference organized by the Ministry of Forests and Environment on Thursday, PM Oli emphasized that even those countries in disagreement on other issues must unite and work together to keep the air and nature clean.

Stating that the government will provide climate finance along with the leadership of the work to face the challenge of climate change, he emphasized that the Ministry of Forests and Environment and the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology should spread awareness to prevent forest fires as the land becomes dry that will adversely affect the agricultural sector, and every community should be alert to prevent human-induced environmental pollution.


“We have not contributed to global warming but have been forced to bear the effects of it. We are being punished for something we did not cause. Nepal being affected is not just our issue as it is a global matter,” PM Oli said, “The issue of the Himalayan climate is not just about the Himalayas. The warming system of the world is connected to the Himalayas.”

Reminding that Nepal should be given climate compensation in the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations, PM Oli said that Nepal has protected 17 percent of the earth’s land to protect its environment. PM Oli also emphasized to start preparations for the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP 30) from now along with the review of COP 29.

The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was held in Baku, Azerbaijan from November 11–22, 2024. The participation of Nepal in the conference and the steps Nepal should take in the field of climate change in the coming days were reviewed. The Nepali delegation, led by President Ram Chandra Paudel, had participated in the conference.


Minister of Home Affairs Ramesh Lekhak, Minister of Physical Infrastructure and Transport Devendra Dahal, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Arzu Rana Deuba, Minister for Forests and Environment, Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, federal parliamentarians, resident representatives of the United Nations, policy makers and local people's representatives had also participated in the conference.
