PM Nepal withdraws party chief Khanal's candidacy

KATHMANDU, July 21: Prime Minister and senior UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, who had proposed UML chairman Jhala Nath Khanal as the party´s prime ministerial candidate at the legislature parliament, withdrew his proposal.



"Since we could not garner 401 votes for two-third majority, we are withdrawing the candidacy as per the party´s central committee decision," PM Nepal said. [break]



Earlier, Maoist prime ministerial candidate Pushpa Kamal Dahal failed to get majority votes in the election for the prime minister. Out of the 597 members of the parliament present, only 242 voted for Dahal. Similarly, 114 members voted against Dahal while 236 members did not vote.



Similarly, Nepali Congress prime ministerial candidate Ram Chandra Poudel also could not garner majority in the voting. One hundred and twenty-four members of the parliament voted for Poudel, while 235 members voted against him and 238 did not cast their votes.
