“Some are accusing the UML of standing in the way of government formation by staying neutral in the voting but I want to refute that. The two candidates are the ones who have held the country hostage,” he told reporters at his residence. [break]
Pushpa Kamal Dahal of UCPN (Maoist) and Ram Chandra Poudel of Nepali Congress (NC) are currently in the prime ministerial race.
Khanal reiterated that his party would continue to stay neutral even in the sixth round of prime ministerial voting scheduled for September 5.
“There is no alternative to forming two-third majority government as such a government can alone deliver peace and constitution before the extended deadline of the CA expires. Therefore, the UML will actively lobby in favor of the issue,” he said.
Khanal also claimed that he was the one who readily withdrew his candidacy even after 391 lawmakers had agreed to vote for him. Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, who proposed his candidacy in parliament, withdrew the proposal at the last minute on the ground that Khanal failed to garner the support of 401 lawmakers in writing before the election.
UML had fielded Khanal on the condition that party lawmakers would vote for him only if he could create conditions favorable for the formation of two-third majority government. Nepal-KP Oli faction of UML and NC leaders have rubbished Khanal´s claim that he had garnered support of 391 lawmakers.
