PM Bhattarai returns home

KATHMANDU, Sept 26: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai returned home Monday morning from New York after taking part in the 66th session of UN General Assembly.



Upon his arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport via a Qatar Airways flight, PM Bhattarai, while speaking to reporters, said his commitment to complete the peace process within 45 days of his assuming office was wrongly construed. [break]



“What I actually meant was that the important tasks of the peace process including the categorization of the PLA will be completed within 45 days of a broad political consensus,” Bhattarai argued.



On the occasion, Bhattarai also described those opposing the four-point deal the Maoists had reached with Madhes-based parties as ‘conservative’.



Highlighting the achievements of his UN visit, Bhattarai said he called on leaders of the advanced countries to provide enhanced international support to the least developed countries in their development efforts, an appeal the PM said was lauded by representatives from the LDCs.



He also said he lobbied for a larger role of the UN General Assembly in relation to the world body´s more powerful Security Council and make the Assembly truly the parliament of all countries of the world.



PM Bhattarai had left for New York on September 18 leading a 13-member Nepali delegation including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Narayankaji Shrestha to attend the UN meet. [break]



DPM Shrestha is scheduled to return home two days later.



PM Bhattarai had addressed the UN General Assembly session on Saturday. He had also met UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and attended a reception hosted by US President Barack Obama.



On the sidelines of the Assembly, he had also held bilateral talks with his Indian counterpart Dr Man Mohan Singh, Chinese President Hu Jintao, Bolivian President Evo Morales, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse and Bhutanese PM Jigmy Thinley, among others.
