KATHMANDU, March 28: People´s Liberation Army (PLA) of the ruling Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) said on Saturday that PLA is ready to vacate cantonments if it is proven to have been sheltering criminals.

A PLA statement, issued in response to an allegation by the ruling Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) that Maoist cantonments have been turned shelters for criminals, said the ex-rebels are ready to undergo punishment by vacating the 28 cantonments. PLA said the UML allegation was directed at people´s aspiration for peace.

In a press statement and a 6-point memorandum submitted to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, UML had accused the Maoists of being behind the murder of a local UML leader, Prachanda Thaiba, in Butwal, Thursday. The statement also claimed that those behind the murder have taken refuge in the cantonment.
