The people of Nepalgunj and Rupaidiya, India accused the government of not taking concrete steps to curb violence that have increased dramatically following the end of Maoist insurgency. The cross-border neighbors urged the administration to ensure security while torching the toy guns. [break]
“We have burnt the toy guns protesting violent activities. We demand an end to this arms race,” said Principal of Simanta College, Rupaidiya Dr Ram Bilash Gupta. “Gun is not the only means of expressing dissatisfaction,” Gupta added referring to the non-violent movement led by Mahatma Gandhi.
President of Rupaidiya Business Community Chhedi Lal Madhesiya said the gun terror should end once and for all.
Participants of the program organized by Peace for Nepal expressed sorrow over repeatedly coming under the target of underground outfits. “The people want to break free from the terror of guns,” said Purna Lal Chuke, a mediaperson.
President of Peace for Nepal Dr Sushil Koirala said the program was organized to demonstrate the people´s desire to live a peaceful life. The participants also urged the state armed forces to exercise restraint while using guns.
