KATHMANDU, Nov 27: A traffic light known as 'Pelican Crossing,' is now in operation in Babarmahal, Kathmandu, allowing pedestrians to control the signal by pressing a button. This innovative traffic control system has been active since this morning.

Automatic traffic lights have been installed in various intersections across the Kathmandu Valley. Jagat Man Shrestha, the traffic management advisor to Kathmandu Metropolitan City, revealed that pedestrian crosswalks have been equipped with a technology that allows pedestrians to press a button and activate the traffic lights. In front of the Kathmandu District Court in Babarmahal, this system has been implemented at a cost of Rs 1 million. “Two minutes after the pedestrian presses the switch, the traffic light turns red, signaling vehicles to stop allowing pedestrians to cross the road. After a few moments, the green light illuminates, allowing vehicles to proceed," said Shrestha.

He said that the Pelican Crossing will facilitate gathering pedestrians and allow them to cross the road at once. He said that since the automatic traffic light does not synchronize with the vehicles, the technology has been designed to activate the lights based on the pedestrians' needs.

He said that the metropolis is preparing to install traffic lights of this technology in front of 36 different schools in Kathmandu.
