Paschimanchal Campus to start tunnel engineering course

POKHARA, Nov 4: Pokhara-based Paschimanchal Campus is preparing to start a course on tunnel engineering.

The college, which is located at Lamachaur of Pokhara, is starting tunnel engineering course at the master's level. The college, which is affiliated to Tribhuvan University, is starting the course from the next academic session with support from Gandaki Province government, and Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), said Ram Prasad Poudel, chief of the campus.     

The course is included in the bachelor's of civil engineering, but tunnel engineering course was not included in the master's level, according to him. He further added that the curriculum has already been prepared.

On Friday and Saturday, the college organized a two-day conference to take suggestions from experts on the issue. “The suggestions from the experts will be incorporated in the curriculum. The proposed curriculum includes courses on tunnel design, geographical structure, construction, re-construction and security, among others,” Poudel said.

Likewise, Prof Dr Narendra Man Shakya, coordinator of civil engineering course at the Institute of Engineering (IOE), said that the campus has already approved the proposed curriculum so the courses will start from the next academic session.

Shakya further added that a total of 40 students will be enrolled for the course at the Kathmandu-based Pulchowk Engineering Campus and Paschimanchal Campus.

Likewise, Prof Dr Krishna Kanta Panthi said the university is preparing to start courses in collaboration with engineering colleges. “The university will help to develop the curriculum, and establish laboratory and classrooms, among others,” he added.

Likewise, Poudel, chief of Paschimanchal Campus, said the tunnel engineering course will be helpful to produce skilled manpower in the country. “The college is preparing to start the course as there is a crisis of skilled manpower within the country. Also, the government has kept the construction of tunnel way at top priority,” he said.

In the plans and policies of Gandaki Province for the current fiscal year, it has allocated Rs 1 million to start the tunnel engineering course.
