BUTWAL, Feb 16: In a brief interview just before the convention of CPN-UML began, Jhana Nath Khanal indicated that he would be a candidate for party chairman.

Are you going to compete for the coveted post of party chairman?

The party workers from east-to-west and north-to-south have been saying so, asking me to give candidacy for the position. I have been listening to them and make take the decision in a few days. I will carefully analyze their suggestions and make my decision.

What is the expected outcome of the convention?

This convention is going to elect a consensus leadership. Let’s wait patiently for a couple of days. The convention is giving the message of unity – both in the party and national politics. We have come thus far despite difficulties past the Constituent Assembly election because of unity among the political party leaders.

If the convention is giving the message of unity, why is there so much tussle among the party leaders for the powerful position?

The top party post won’t be disputed. Differences being there doesn’t mean it’s a nasty war. It is a democratic war. There is a high possibility of pushing ahead with consensus.
