Although the use of children in electoral campaigns is forbidden by the Convention on the Rights of Child and the Election Code of Conduct, the authority in the district are not doing anything to stop the malpractice. [break]
Election fever has gripped the district. Posters depicting the party slogan and electing candidate can be found pasted on facades of builds, walls, electric poll and fences across the district.
“People waving party flags and dancing to the beat of their party songs has become a common sight here for the past few days, so has the participation of children in the campaigns,” said a local.
Most of the children involved in the canvassing are higher secondary-level students.
However, Jajarkot District Election Officer Bhuwan Singh Thapa, claimed that they have not noticed any such activity in the district.
“To use children in election campaigning is illegal and we will take action if the parties are found involved in it,” Thapa added.
