The move by the largest political parties comes at a time when the constitution-writing process in the Constituent Assembly (CA) has been hobbled by serious differences among the political parties.
"The meeting was informal, but extremely important. We have agreed to continuously hold talks and sort out differences surfaced during the constitution-writing process," said Maoist deputy leader at the parliament Narayankaji Shrestha. He said the political parties agreed to talk among themselves and with fringe political parties in order to rev up the process. "It is a good initiative to speed up the task of constitution writing," Shrestha added. He said the political parties have mulled forming some mechanism in this regard.
"Constitution writing will not move ahead if such differences among the political parties persist," said UML leader Bharat Mohan Adhikari, who also participate in the meeting. "Only eight months have remained for the promulgation of a new constitution. So it is high time we developed some mechanism to sort out the differences and forge consensus," said Adhikari. He said that the leaders, who participated in the meeting, will talk with their respective leadership in the party about developing such a mechanism.
Nembang tells parties to present federal models
Meanwhile, CA Chairman Subas Nemabang on Wednesday called a meeting of the major political parties´ chief whips and asked them to submit their federal models to the CA Committee for State Restructuring. No party except for the UCPN (Maoist) has presented its proposal on federal model to the CA committee.
"I have pressured the chief whips to present their models to the concerned committee as soon as possible," said Nembang.
The deadline set by the CA Committee for the political parties to present their federal model expired thrice, but the parties say they are still working on their model.
