KATHMANDU, Nov 25: The major political parties said on Friday that they would fix the length of additional term of the Constituent Assembly (CA) after studying the Supreme Court (SC) verdict.

The parties were supposed to fix the CA term on Friday but they decided to defer the decision until Sunday morning when they are to meet again to fix the length of the to-be-extended Constituent Assembly (CA) term. [break]The present term expires on November 30.

“We deferred our decision because we thought we should study the verdict before taking any decision,” said Nepali Congress General Secretary Prakash Man Singh, who attended the meeting.

The SC has ruled that the term can be extended for six more months for the last time.

NC for short extension of CA term

Meanwhile, the Nepali Congress (NC) central committee (CC) on Friday took a decision in favor of a short extension of the CA term.

Though a majority of the CC members speaking at the meeting suggested that the CA term not be extended for more than three months, the CC abstained from taking any decision saying the matter should instead be settled through negotiations among the political parties.

“We are not in favor of extending the CA term for another six months as proposed by the government. We want the term renewed for a short period,” said Singh.

The meeting also reviewed the implementation of the seven-point deal signed on November 21. “It is a positive development that the categorization of the Maoist combatants has progressed. But the overall implementation of the seven-point agreement has not been unsatisfactory,” Singh said.

According to Singh, the Maoists have not taken any steps to legalize the vehicles, mostly stolen ones, used by the Maoist leaders and return seized properties to the rightful owners.

“We will seek a calendar plan from the government for implementation of the seven-point deal,” said Singh. “Then we take a decision on how long the CA term should be extended,” he added.
