PAM wins judo title

KATHMANDU, April 3: Prisoners' Assistance Mission (PAM) lifted the title of the First CWCN International Judo Championship on Friday, winning a total of seven out of 16 gold medals up for grabs in the two-day tournament.

PAM, a shelter that looks after the kids of prisoners who are serving jail terms, has raked up almost ten titles in the last six years since introducing judo to the children in 2009."Our children have won the title of every domestic tournament they have competed in since the last six years," said Surya Narayan Shrestha, president of PAM.

"It our hat-trick of titles in this tournament," he added.

On Friday, PAM finished first in the tournament organized by Child Watawaran Center Nepal (CWCN) securing seven golds, one silver and one bronze. PAM had also won the last two editions of this tournament when it didn't feature any international player.

The host CWCN's 'C' team secured second position with two golds, four silvers and two bronzes while CWCN 'A' settled for the third position winning one gold, two silvers and four bronzes.

Bhutan's Tenzing Wangchuk and PAM's Manita Pradhan Shrestha were adjudged the best players in the boys' and girls' sections respectively.

"Tenzing and Manita were the standout players of the day. Both of them won gold medals," added PAM President Shrestha.

On the closing day of the tournament, Pramod Mandal (U-35 kg) of PAM, Laxman GC (U-45 kg) of HOPAD and Kiran Gadel (U-55 kg) of MMAC clinched gold medals winning their respective matches in the boys' section.

Meanwhile, in the girls' category, Ruksana Khatun (U-36 kg) of PAM, Devika Maya Shrestha (U-44 kg), Kavita Nepali (U-52 kg) of CWCN 'C' and Punam Shrestha (open category) of Central Dojo won gold medals in their respective weight categories.

Nepal Judo Association President Deepak Harsha Bajracharya announced after the tournament that Manita and Kiran have been selected to participate in a week-long training scheduled to be held in Switzerland by the International Judo Federation in June.

According to the tournament coordinator Dharma Kumar Shrestha, altogether 115 judokas of Nepal and 11 from Bhutan had participated in the two-day event.
