Raj Babu Shrestha, executive director of PAF, and Darrell Deppert, chief of party of the USAID Nepal´s Education for Income Generation Program, signed the MoU Monday.[break]
As per the MoU, the two sides have agreed to collaborate in assessing the need for job creation, developing and imparting applicable training to eligible youths and extending support for enterprise development and job creation.
Issuing a press statement, PAF said the youths of the mid-western region will receive trainings in life skills, vocational education and agriculture trades including Non-Timber Forest Product (NTFPs) production and sustainable harvesting under the program.
Commercial farming and marketing of vegetables and enterprise training along the agricultural value chains are the components of collaboration.
“The targeted youths and poor farmers will be linked in a demand driven fashion to markets and trained in appropriate technologies related to the farming, processing and marketing of vegetables and NTFPs,” the statement added.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Shrestha said the new agreement will ensure increased opportunity for disadvantaged youths, including poor farmers of the region. Deppert too stated that the alliance will help to realize both the programs´ objectives of poverty reduction, job creations, and livelihood improvement and increased income for the rural poor.
PAF Nepal is the government´s program, implementing targeted poverty reduction programs in 40 districts. Till mid July 2010, it has covered 400,818 poor families.
USAID Nepal´s Education for Income Generation (EIG) Program too has been working with over 70,000 marginalized youths, supporting them to earn income by linking them to employment opportunities in all fifteen districts of the region.
