Lawati died at the Norvic Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment for heart and kidney-related ailments. Lawati had returned home from Medanta Hospital, New Delhi last week but could not recover. He was then admitted to Norvic on Saturday.Lawati, who was born on July 22, 1939, had started his political career at the age of 23. He was elected Pradhan Pancha (chairman) of Yasok village in Panchthar district at the age of 25. Lawati, who was appointed state minister for Industry and Commerce in 2029 BS for the first time, held various ministerial portfolios for 12 times in the Panchayat era and after the restoration of democracy in 1990.
Lawati, who became Home Minister as well as Minister for General Administration in early 1980s, was Minister for Land Reforms in 1989.
After the restoration of democracy in 1990, Lawati joined the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), a political force formed by the leaders of the Panchayat era.
He was a founding leader of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal, the party formed by splitting the RPP. Lawati served the party as co-chairman until last year. Lawati contested for the party's chairmanship in the general convention held in Kathmandu last year but lost to Kamal Thapa. Since then raising the issue of transparency within the party, Lawati was leading the parallel central committee uniting the rebels within the party.
Lawati is survived by wife, three sons and two daughters. According to family source, his last rites will be performed on Saturday.
