Paddy production to rise in eastern districts

ITAHARI, Nov 10: Regional Agriculture Directorate, Biratnagar, has projected paddy production to increase in 12 of the 16 districts in the eastern region. The directorate also said productions in those districts could rise by as much as 20 percent this year due to timely plantation and favorable monsoon.



The directorate projects 20 percent rise in production in Udaypur district. The district is expected to produce 59,346 tons from 15,500 hectares of paddy fields. The district had produced 49,455 tons last year.[break]



Similarly, paddy production in Sankhuwasabha is estimated to increase by 15 percent this year. Total production is expected to touch 39,530 tons in 18,111 hectares of paddy fields. Last year, the district had produced 27,430 tons.



The production is expected to increase by 10 percent in Taplejung, Ilam, Jhapa, Solukhumbu and Khotang. “Production in Taplejung is expected to increase to 16,217 tons in 10,900 hectares. The district had produced 15,205 tons last year,” said Hridaya Ram Pokharel, assistant technician at the directorate.



Paddy production in Ilam is expected to grow to 44,475 tons from 35,914 recorded last year. Paddy was cultivated in 14,224 hectares in the district this year.



In the like manner, production in Jhapa is expected to rise to 307,740 tons this year. Though cultivation was recorded in 87,000 hectares of paddy fields, production did not grow much due to pest attack.



Production is estimated to rise by 7 percent each in Panchthar and Sunsari despite decline in paddy cultivation area. Sunsari is expected to produce 210,126 tons from 52,942 hectares. Similarly, production in Siraha is estimated to increase by 6 percent to 113,925 tons.



Paddy yield in Morang is projected to rise by 4 percent to 322,640 tons, while production is Terhathum is estimated to rise by 5 percent to 21,102 tons.



Production in Okhaldhunga and Saptari, however, is projected to decline by 10 and 3 percent respectively.
