KATHMANDU, Nov 15: More than 80,000 new voters have been added to the electoral roll through the use of the National Identity Card, according to the Election Commission.
The number of new registrations has seen a notable rise after EC began allowing the use of the National ID for voter enrolment.
21,010 new voters added in Siraha
According to EC Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, as of 9:00 pm on Friday, a total of 80,456 new voters had been registered using the National ID system. Of them, 50,217 are men, 30,235 are women, and four fall under the ‘others’ category.
With this addition, the total number of voters registered since the announcement of the election has reached 281,129. The Commission is continuing to register voters today as well.
Previously, voters had to register only through designated district and local election offices. However, to ease pressure on these offices, the Commission introduced a provision on November 12 allowing citizens to provide biometric details—photograph and fingerprints—through the National Identity Card enrolment system.
The voter registration and update process is being carried out in preparation for the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5.
