Over 8,000 fugitive prisoners return to Jails, 6,500 still at large

Among those who returned, 7,713 had fled from prisons and 341 from correctional homes.

KATHMANDU, Sept 26: Out of 14,549 inmates who escaped from 28 prisons and nine correctional facilities across the country, 8,054 have so far returned, according to the Department of Prison Management. Among those who returned, 7,713 had fled from prisons and 341 from correctional homes.



Department Director Chomendra Neupane said some inmates surrendered voluntarily, while others were arrested and brought back by security personnel. He added that 6,494 prisoners are still on the run—5,872 from prisons and 622 from correctional homes—and the search for them continues.

During the Gen-Z movement on September 9, a total of 13,585 inmates escaped from prisons and 964 from correctional facilities. Meanwhile, 10 inmates have died since the breakout. Of the total prison population of 30,646 before the incident, 23,446 inmates remain behind bars.
