Surging outflux of Nepali workers into foreign market

In the first six months of the current fiscal year 2024/25, a total of 393,067 people have received permits to work abroad. According to this, it can be surmised that 65,000 young people went overseas in search of employment every month.

KATHMANDU, Jan 22: In the first six months of the current fiscal year 2024/25, a total of 393,067 people have received permits to work abroad. According to this, it can be surmised that 65,000 young people went overseas in search of employment every month. 


The Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE) says that around 67,258 youths have received work permits in mid-December to mid-January (Poush). Among them, 7,105 are women.

By the end of Poush, around 225,625 in new labor permits and 162,628 in renewal labor permits had gone overseas. Similarly, a total of 4,814 young people have left especially for Korea and Israel.


During this period, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as the primary destination for Nepali workers. In the month of Poush alone, 21,121 individuals obtained labor approvals for the UAE.


Similarly, labor approvals were granted to 13,642 individuals for Saudi Arabia followed by 11,983 for Qatar, 6,050 for Kuwait, 3,175 for Malaysia, 1,946 for Japan and 1,134 for Croatia.


According to the data from the last six months, there are 122,829 workers in the UAE, which amounts 31.24 percent of the total workforce. In terms of monthly data, 17,541 workers went in mid-July to mid-August with 18,605 in mid-August to mid-September, 17,724 in mid-September to mid-October, 23,069 in mid-October to mid-November, 24,769 in mid-November to mid-December and 21,211 in mid-December to mid-January.
