POKHARA, May 10: More than Rs 20 million has been raised through the Mahayajnya being performed here for the past week to construct a crematory.

Pundit Kamalnayan Gautam is reciting the Bhagawad Gita in the Yajnya to help raise funds to construct a properly managed crematory by the bank of the Seti river at Ramghat in Pokhara Sub-metropolis 11 and 12.

The Yajnya that has been organized by Ramghat Road and Crematory Ad-hoc Committee with the slogan ´Let´s respect the dead body while we live´ has raised 17.5 million in cash, and the remainder in goods.

More than 5,000 have made donations so far with people donating more than 100,000 reaching almost a hundred. Bimal Basyal of Pokhara 14 now leads the donation chart at Rs 1,211,000. “We plan to raise over 30 million,” said a hopeful Yuvaraj Tripathi, publicity coordinator of the Mahayajnya that is scheduled to end on Monday.

Organizers have made a master plan worth 31 million to construct five funeral parlours, one funeral residence, and a 500m road to the crematory. Kaski District Development Committee and Pokhara Sub-metropolis have pledged to provide the remaining amount if the amount raised from Yajnya proves insufficient.

People from Kaski, Syangja and Tanahu have attended the event. “Everybody ends up at a crematory after death. So, it´s everyone´s duty to help make a well-managed crematory,” said highest donor Basyal.
