It has been estimated that over 25,000 metric tons of fertilizers have been held back at the dry ports for over a month now.Agricultural Inputs Company Limited and Salt Trading Cooperation are major importers of fertilizers to Nepal. As per the company's record, Agricultural Inputs Company has ordered 23,000 tons of urea and 15,000 tons of DAP. Salt Trading, meanwhile, has ordered 15,000 tons of urea. However, the orders have been stranded at Indian dry ports.
According to Rajendra Bahadur Karki, chairperson of the regional office of AICL in Birgunj, they have already sent 8,416.25 metric tons of imported urea and 9,121.3 metric tons of DPA to various destinations this year. However, over 20,000 metric tons of fertilizers are stuck at the dry ports.
"The ongoing protests have hindered regular transportation of fertilizers. Thanks to the assistance of local administration and willingness of few demonstrators, few tons have been allowed to move in," said Karki.
As per the record of Salt Trading Company, around 5,000 tons of fertilizers have been stopped at the dry ports. "We have only distributed around 4,000 tons of fertilizers so far. We are waiting for the remaining fertilizers stuck at the Indian border to arrive," said Amoj Lamichhaney, chairperson of the Narayani Zone chapter of Salt Trading Company.
