Over 100 community schools in Solukhumbu shut down due to cold

SALLERI (SOLUKHUMBU), Jan 13: Over 100 community schools in Solukhumbu have been closed due to the increasing cold. 

Altogether 101 out of 267 community schools in the district have been closed due to extreme cold, said Solukhumbu District Education and Coordination Unit official Birama Kumari Khadka. Other schools in the district are also preparing to declare winter holidays.

A total of 58 out of 62 community schools in Solu Dudh Kunda Municipality, 14 out of 17 schools in Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality and seven out of 51 schools in Thulung Dudh Koshi Rural Municipality have been closed.

Similarly, eight out of 19 schools in Mahakulung Rural Municipality and six out of 22 schools in Likhupike Rural Municipality have been closed. Four out of 36 schools in Nechasalyan Rural Municipality and four out of 39 schools in Madhya Dudh Koshi Rural Municipality have been closed.

Principal of PK Secondary School in Loding, Chet Bahadur Magar, said that the school was closed from the last week of December because it was difficult for the teachers and students to come to school regularly. 

Similarly, schools in the upper Khumbu area of the district have also been closed. Tilak Rasaili, a teacher of Khumjung Secondary School, said that the winter vacation was announced following the rain that led to freezing temperatures in the high mountainous region.

However, all the schools in Sotang rural municipality are running as usual. As Sotang is a warm place none of the schools here are closed, said Chair of the rural municipality, Khilraj Basnet.
