KATHMANDU, Oct 18: Opposition parties in parliament have criticized the government for failing to effectively address the plight of those affected by recent floods and landslides.
During a meeting convened by the main opposition leader and CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal at the federal parliament building on Friday, opposition leaders expressed their dissatisfaction with the government's inadequate relief and rehabilitation efforts for affected communities across the country.

The floods and landslides, triggered by heavy rainfall on September 27 and 29, wreaked havoc in eastern and central Nepal, claiming over 220 lives and causing significant property damage. A large number of people were displaced from their homes.
Opposition leaders alleged that government assistance to the affected communities has been painfully slow. Many victims are still without proper shelter and are forced to live under makeshift tarpaulins.
Government officials have stated that damage assessments are still underway to expedite the relief and rehabilitation process. In response, the opposition parties agreed to jointly call on the government to provide immediate relief by submitting a memorandum.
"The government's apathy towards the flood victims is unacceptable. Instead of prioritizing the people's needs, the focus has been on party interests. We will address this by submitting a memorandum," said a Maoist leader after the meeting.
The meeting also discussed the possibility of convening a special session of Parliament.
