One arrested on charge of defrauding 83 people in name of foreign employment

KATHMANDU, Dec 20: The police have arrested an individual who fled to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by defrauding 83 people on the pretext of attractive salary for foreign employment.

The accused Komalraj Upadhyay, who was arrested in Dubai in coordination with the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol), has been brought to Nepal by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police.

It is alleged that 41-year-old Upadhyay, who is a native of Sarlahi and living in the UAE, swindled Rs 26.35 million from 83 people by enticing them with promises of overseas employment. Superintendent of Police (SP) Nabraj Adhikari, spokesperson for the CIB, informed Republica that his statement is being heard in the district court.

His proceedings have started in the District Court Kathmandu under the bench of Judge Kishor Ghimire. After the statement, there will be a closed debate.

Upadhyay, who operated Trinetra Management Consultancies Pvt Ltd fled to the UAE defrauding 83 people including Sriram Ranabhat. The CIB conducted investigations and submitted a report against the accused on charges of fraud and criminal treachery.

According to the CIB, Trinetra Management Consultancy, of which Upadhyay is also the director, lured them to Dubai through a visit visa with attractive salary and benefits as Arms Guard, DPS Security in Dubai, and took money from them for employment but did not employ them as stated.

Now, there are 83 fraud complaints filed against him. A red notice was issued by the Secretary General of the Interpol on May 10, 2022 at the request of the Interpol section of Nepal Police to search and arrest the defendant on charges related to fraud.
