Once kidnapped, now in debt trap

SURKHET, Aug 16: A man has been forced to depart his village home for India to work as a laborer and pay off the loan taken by his family to rescue him from kidnappers.



Surendra Adhikari, 20, a resident of Rajeni VDC in Surkhet district, was kidnapped allegedly by a policeman and a fromer Maoist rebel on July 18. [breaka]



Two days later, he was freed after his family paid Rs 150,000 as ransom to the kidnappers. His father Lalit had arranged the ransom money by taking loans from his relatives. “I am sure I will never be able to pay off the loan by working in village, Lalit said. So, I agreed to send my son to work in India as a manual laborer.



Police say Umesh Thakur, who was a policeman posted at Chinchu Area Police Office, Surkhet and Pushpa Badi, a former Maoist combtant, had kidnapped Surendra. Thakur and Badi are still absconding.
