Omicron subspecies ‘BA Five’ found in Nepal

KATHMANDU, July 3: A new subspecies of the Omicron variant of coronavirus, BA Five, has been confirmed in Nepal. A genetic test conducted at Dhulikhel Hospital has found a subspecies of Omicron, BA Five.

KATHMANDU, July 3: A new subspecies of the Omicron variant of coronavirus, BA Five, has been confirmed in Nepal. A genetic test conducted at Dhulikhel Hospital has found a subspecies of Omicron, BA Five.


The hospital said BA Five was found in the gene sequencing done last week. Prof Dr Rajiv Shrestha, head of Laboratory and Infectious Diseases Research at the hospital, said that BA Five was confirmed while testing the samples.

However, he said that the information of the infected person has not been revealed yet. He said that BA Five, a subspecies of Omicron, has spread in Nepal.
