Om Prakash Mishra recommended as new Chief Justice (with video)

KATHMANDU, Sept 10: The Parliamentary Hearing Committee has unanimously endorsed Justice Om Prakash Mishra as the country's new chief justice.

KATHMANDU, Sept 10: The Parliametnary Hearing Committee has unanimously endorsed Justice Om Prakash Mishra as the country's new chief justice.


Earlier today, Justice Om Prakash Mishra has expressed his commitment to make necessary reforms in justice mechanisms while adhering to zero tolerance against corruption in his address to the Parliamentary Hearing Committee at Singha Durbar.


Mishra said that he would continually work to protect rule of law, good governance and ensure citizen's rights to help realize  development and prosperity in the country.

"The judiciary must bestow trust among citizens by being fair and transparent," he said adding that every citizen is entitled for free, fair and efficient access to justice.


"To do so, we have to improve our systems to meet expectations of a citizen's right to fair trial," he said.  


He said the judiciary needed to be equipped with skills and resources to address possible differences while implementing federalism.


The PHC will decide whether Mishra could be appointed as the head of the judiciary as per Article 292 of the Constitution. If the PHC confirms his appointment, he will serve as the CJ till December 31, 2018.


The Constitutional Council (CC) headed by Prime Minister KP Oli on Thursday, August 23 picked Supreme Court (SC) Acting Chief Justice Om Prakash Mishra as the Chief Justice (CJ).
