KATHMANDU, May 23: CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has said that the arrest of Kailash Sirohiya, the chairman of Kantipur Media Group, is not an infringement on media freedom. Oli emphasized that the arrest was related to criminal matters requiring investigation, not because of Sirohiya's media activities or publications.
Addressing concerns about the impact on democratic values, Oli said, “The arrest of a media figure should not be seen as a threat to democracy when high-ranking officials, including ministers and deputy prime ministers, have also faced arrests without jeopardizing democratic processes and the same applies to media figures.”
Oli refrained from commenting on the specifics of the arrest's appropriateness or timing but stressed that it should not be misconstrued as an attack on the rights to free speech or media.
