Off to the Lion City

Long, long ago, when a Sumatran prince wanted to build a new nation, he happened to sail into an island which is now known as Singapore. Upon reaching there, he and his men started exploring the place to test if it was suitable for living. In the course of their exploration, they suddenly came across a giant beast with red mane and white body. The prince had never seen anything like that before. When his ministers told him that the creature was called a “lion,” he decided to name the city that they founded as “the Lion City”.

The island city-state on the southern tip of Malay Peninsula in Southeast Asia, at present, is one of the world’s most prosperous countries and busiest ports. It is a combination of ultramodern skyscrapers and the ancient Chinese, Malay and Indian traditions in the backdrop of a tropical climate, tasty food, good shopping and a vibrant nightlife. Although densely populated, more than half of Singapore is covered with greenery, considering the 50 major parks and 4 nature reserves — the reason behind its second name, the Garden City. [break]

The center of the city is located in the south — consisting roughly of the Orchard Road shopping area, the Riverside, the new Marina Bay area and also the skyscraper-filled Shenton Way financial district known in Singapore as the Central Business District.

Singaporean cuisine is diverse and delicious, with bustling hawker centers and coffee shops that are open round the clock. Shoppers can experience paradise in shopping centers like Orchard Road and Suntec City. You can even bungee jump and dance on bar tops all night long. But alcohol is quite pricey and chewing gum can only be bought from a pharmacy for medical use.

Weather

Singapore’s climate

is tropical, mostly hot and humid throughout the year, so weather shouldn’t be a consideration when booking a trip. The most popular time for visitors is June through July and November through December, when Singapore has

school holidays.

Trip essentials

One may have to pay heavy fines for bringing prohibited items into the country. For instance, Cigarettes require an expensive duty tax be paid. Similarly, chewing gum, electronic cigarettes, pirated DVDs, and chewing tobacco are also banned.
