NUWAKOT, April 8: People in remote villages in Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts are still using rock salt due to the shortage of iodised salt.

Sale of rock salt is still prevalent at Battar, Devighat, Apraha and Dhunge areas in Nuwakot and also at Betrawati Bazaar. Local traders say sale of rock salt is more than that of iodised salt.

Although the government has announced that the use of iodised salt would be completely effected throughout the country by 2015, its supply has not been that effective and people are still using the rock salt.

As per statistics, 0.4 per cent of the country´s total population suffers from goiter and cretinism due to the deficiency of iodine.
