KATHMANDU, March 11: A central committee meeting of the Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP) was postponed after Chairperson Ranjita Shrestha fell ill. The central committee scheduled to convene on Monday had to be rescheduled. Earlier, the meeting was set to be held at Tikapur in Kailali at 1 PM.
Ramesh BK, personal secretary of Chairperson Shrestha, said that the meeting had to be postponed due to her health issues. “The meeting was postponed due to the health issues of the chairperson,” he told Republica, “She could not travel to Tikapur from Kathmandu due to her poor health.”
The working committee led by Resham Chaudhary, who had been unanimously appointed as the chairman by the first general convention, was disqualified by the Election Commission (EC). The commission sought an explanation from Chaudhary questioning the legitimacy of his leadership within the party. After receiving his reply, the EC disqualified Chaudhary.
After the EC disqualified Chaudhary, the first meeting of NUP was called on Monday. After the EC disqualified Chaudhary and gave validity to the old working committee led by Shrestha, she called the working committee meeting for the first time.
The agenda of the meeting was determined to include discussions on whether the federal government and the Sudurpaschim Provincial government should collaborate. The ongoing tension between Shrestha and Chaudhary has pushed the Sudurpaschim Provincial government into a state of instability, unable to form a majority.
Chairperson Shrestha expressed her determination to attend the meeting in Tikapur on Monday despite her illness. However, Shrestha was admitted to a hospital after a sudden increase in blood sugar level and blood pressure.
