Number of registered newspapers climbs to 7,874 in Nepal

KATHMANDU, Sept 25: The number of registered newspapers across the country is 7,874. According to the 46th Annual Report, 2077/78, published on the occasion of the 52nd anniversary of the Press Council of Nepal, the number of dailies published from all over the country is 744.

The report states that there are 39 bi-weekly, 2,956 weekly, 476 fortnightly, 2,347 monthly, 384 bi-monthly, 650 quarterly, 39 quarterly, 87 bi-annual and 93 annual newspapers. According to the council, 705 daily, 30 bi-weekly, 2,859 weekly, 399 fortnightly, 592 monthly, 602 bi-monthly, 104 quarterly and 40 other newspapers were published in the fiscal year 2077/78.

Bagmati province records the highest number of newspaper agencies registered among the seven provinces. A total of 2,657 newspapers have been registered in the province. According to the council, no magazines have been published and registered in Mugu and Manang districts so far. 

Kathmandu is the district with the highest number of registered newspapers. Altogether, 2000 newspapers are registered in Kathmandu district until the fiscal year 2077/78 BS. Parsa comes second in terms of the number of registered newspapers after Kathmandu. The report states that only a few of the registered newspapers were published and not all of them were published regularly. Statistics shows that the publication of the newspaper has been delayed due to various reasons after the lockdown was issued across the country due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As many as 2,760 online news portals have been listed across the country so far. In the last fiscal year alone, 622 online media outlets were listed, according to the Council.
