The agitating employees have padlocked the main and other entrances of the TV apparently to block Aryal´s entry to the office.
A cabinet meeting on Wednesday appointed Aryal as executive chairman of the state-run TV. Talking to myrepublica, Gajurdhan Rai, a journalist with NTV, said they don´t have any reservation over his appointment as chairman. "But, we have strong objection on his appointment with executive powers," he said, adding, "This is against the existing practice."
The employees are demanding that a senior most permanent staff of NTV be appointed an executive head of the channel.
Earlier, the erstwhile Maoist-led government had appointed Rishi Raj Baral as executive chairman of the TV. However, the government had to revoke its decision following mounting pressure from the employees´ union.
It had later appointed Purna Bahadur Ghartimagar as chairman sans executive power. Employees argue that a chairman with executive powers tends to take arbitrary decisions.
Altogether 473 employees are serving NTV in its central office in Kathmandu. All the employees have come out from the office to demonstrate against the government decision.
