KATHMANDU, May 26: Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has started studying feasibility of 4G technology in Nepal. The fourth generation of cellular wireless technology is known for faster data speed, high-quality video conferencing and faster internet access.

NTA Chairperson Bhesh Raj Kanel said the telecom sector regulator had started internal study on the feasibility of 4G service. “We are at the preliminary stage of the study and our team is currently studying from the experience of other countries that have introduced this technology,” Kanel added.[break]

Once the team submits its report, NTA will then forward the report to Radio Frequency Policy Determination Committee (RFPDC) of NTA. The committee will take necessary action on the basis of findings of the report and meeting with stakeholders concerned.

The committee, which is headed by the Minister of Information of Communications (MoIC), has secretaries of Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation as members. It among others determines policy related to radio frequencies, its allocation and pricing.

After the introduction of 4G technology, users can surf internet at the speed of 100 Mbps. Telecom operators currently offer up to 3.4 Mbps internet speed under 3G network.

Private telecom operator Ncell has already unveiled its plan of upgrading its network to 4G once it receives license and spectrum from the government. It has also asked for frequency in the range of 700 to 2,600 MHz to introduce the service.

Meanwhile, NTA has informed RFDPC about its recommendations on WiMax and spectrum management. The authority is preparing to introduce WiMax after the committee takes decision on frequency allocation for the service. With the help of this technology, telecom operators and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) can offer high speed data service even in areas where optical fiber is not available.
