KATHMANDU, Aug 29: Nepal Telecom (NT) officials Sunday said some ´invisible´ forces were creating hindrance for the telecommunication major for the launch of its new projects.

Referring to the slow progress in the installation of Next Generation Network (NGN), Amar Nath Singh, managing director of NT, said, “We have a feeling that some forces are trying to stop us from launching our new projects.” [break]

Addressing a press meet organized to make public NT´s plan for fiscal year 2010/11, Singh said they would launch services based on NGN technology at the earliest if the problems are solved at the government level.

NT has already signed contracts with Chinese vendors ZTE and Huawei for NGN technology.

“We have already signed contracts for the supply of equipment to run 666,000 telephone lines (272,000 POTS, 145,000 DSL and 250,000 SIP/VOIP) in NGN technology,” Singh said.

NT had started NGN project three years ago. But the service has been delayed after complaints were filed against at the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) and parliamentary Public Accounts Committee among others.

NT Spokesperson Surendra Prasad Thike informed the press that the state-owned telecommunication giant was planning to distribute 46,000 lines ADSL broadband internet in 75 districts. He also informed that NT plans to provide Wi-Fi internet service at 500 locations across the country.

NT is also planning to expand 3,000 km of optical fiber network in coordination with Nepal Electricity Authority and an additional 800 km on its own.

NT also plans to upgrade quality of mobile service by upgrading equipment and coordinating with other companies for network optimization. Thike said complaints regarding the quality of mobile service will decrease to some extent following network optimization.

Similarly, NT also plans to expand its transmission infrastructures by setting up 120 radio links.

Thike informed that NT was planning to take telecommunication service to remote areas by setting up 150 VSATs. The telecommunication giant is also coming up with convergent real time billing system to make bill payments easier for customers.

According to unaudited results, NT earned a net profit of Rs 10.40 billion in fiscal year 2009/10, up from Rs 10.17 billion recorded a year earlier.
