NT to contribute Rs 1billion for reconstruction

KATHMANDU, May 10: Nepal Telecom (NT) has committed Rs 1 billion over three years to assist in the reconstruction of historical monuments, Durbar Squares and community schools devastated by the major earthquake that hit Nepal on April 25th.

"We have prioritized various damaged areas and will spend Rs 1 billion to repair them. We will work under the direction of the Nepal Government and follow their reconstruction plan," said Subash Chandra Sah, deputy managing director of the marketing department of NT.

According to NT, the company will contribute towards the reconstruction of Dharahara, and Swayambhunath in Kathmandu, Manakamana Temple of Gorkha, Patan and Bhaktpur Durbar Squares and community schools in various parts of the country.Meanwhile, the company has donated around Rs 271 million to the Prime Minister's (PM) Disaster Relief Fund.

The cheque of Rs 250 million was handed over to Prime Minister Sushil Koirala by Chairman of NT, Sunil Bahadur Malla. Similarly, Rs 20.07 million collected from salaries of the staff of NT has also been handed over to PM Disaster Relief Fund by Buddhi Prasad Acharya, managing director of NT.

NT also handed over a cheque of Rs 81,600 to the Prime Minister, a figure equivalent to the incentives on offer for board members to attend 3 board meetings.

To collect money for the relief effort, NT has brought into operation 3 different numbers to send donations via SMS through the use of CDMA and GSM technology. "Customers have to type 'help' and send SMS to 15025 to donate Rs 25, 15050 to donate Rs 50 and 15100 to donate Rs 100. NT will not charge SMS to above mentioned codes, NT said in a statement.

"The amount collected through SMS will be made public through the NT's website and will be deposited into the PM Disaster Relief Fund on regular intervals," said NT in the statement.

NT had earlier made all calls, national and international, SMS and data services, free of cost from April 25 to April 30. According to NT, free call worth Rs 1.46 billion were made during this period. It has also provided 100 calls free for PSTN and CDMA users and one week additional period for ADSL users.
