KATHMANDU, June 13: Two state-owned entities - Nepal Telecom (NT) and Nepal Television (NTV) - are preparing to introduce Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) in Nepal with the assistance of International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

A source at the Ministry of Information and Communications said officials of NT and NTV have already held preliminary discussion to finalize operational structure of IPTV in Nepal.[break]

As per the preliminary discussion, NT will provide technical infrastructure, including optical fiber, while NTV will provide contents for IPTV.

The engineering division of NTV is currently conducting feasibility study of IPTV in Nepal.

Once IPTV is launched, customers having internet access can enjoy television programs without any wire connection. Subscribers of 3G service can also have access to IPTV from their handsets.

“The concept of cable internet is exactly opposite of IPTV. In cable internet, customers use internet from cable primarily designed for television,” the source said, adding, “But in IPTV, people can watch TV through internet line.”

IPTV needs broadband internet connection for the delivery of video services in computer screen or television sets of latest model. However, officials said the NT-NTV project is working on to make IPTV possible in traditional television sets as well.

Internet service provider WorldLink, a year ago, had requested the Ministry of Information and Communications to allocate it frequency to operate IPTV. It had showed interest to broadcast five Nepali new channels through this technology. The ministry is yet to decide on the issue.

Similarly, two foreign companies -- ZTE and UTStarcom -- had also expressed their willingness to operate IPTV about two years ago.
