KATHMANDU, Nov 1: A delegation of Non-Resident Nepalis Association (NRNA) met with senior political leaders on Monday and urged them to end the existing political deadlock, speed up the constitution drafting process and pledge them rights to hold dual citizenship in the new constitution.

The delegation led by NRNA President Dev Man Hirachan met with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala, Constituent Assembly (CA) Chairman Subash Nembang and top leaders of major political parties, including UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and CPN-UML.[break]

During the meeting, the delegation emphasized that there was no alternative to consensus and asked the leaders to come to an understanding on formation of the new government, constitution drafting and steering the peace process to a logical end.

“The failure to elect new prime minister even after the repeated rounds of elections has dented the country´s image and raised question over the political leaders´ capacity to resolve the problems that the country has been facing,” Hirachan told leaders.

He added that the NRNs were worried that the continued deadlock could erode people´s faith towards democracy and democratic process. The delegation appealed to the leaders to free the country from the long-running impasse and pave the way for speedy completion of constitution drafting.

The aspirations of the people in the wake of Jana Andolan II was to have a constitution that guarantees their rights, fulfill their social security needs and protect their economic interests, said Hirachan, referring to the spirit of popular people´s movement.

“Unfortunately, affairs in the CA suggest that the leaders are working to fulfill their partisan interests and not the interests of the people,” he stated, expressing concerns of NRNs over such a situation.

The delegation appealed all the leaders to build consensus and follow the politics of participation and tolerance.

Likewise, the NRNA leaders also pushed the parties to include a provision in the nw constitution that allows them hold dual citizenship. “We seek the facility of dual citizenship because we want our children and grand children know where their root is,” said Hirachan.

Issuing a statement, NRNA has said that the political leaders have taken their requests seriously and have expressed commitment to fulfill them.
