NRB directs banks to open accounts based on National Identity Cards

Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has once again urged banks and financial institutions to facilitate account opening based on national identity cards through a public notice. The central bank had previously issued integrated directives instructing banks and financial institutions on this matter.

KATHMANDU, January 12: Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has once again urged banks and financial institutions to facilitate account opening based on national identity cards through a public notice. The central bank had previously issued integrated directives instructing banks and financial institutions on this matter.


To ensure easy access to national identity cards, the Department of National ID and Civil Registration has arranged for identity cards to be obtained through all District Administration Offices. Similarly, in the Kathmandu Valley, national identity cards are being issued not only through District Administration Offices but also via temporary camps, as mentioned in the notice.

The department has also enabled a system to check the national identity card number and application status through its portal. The NRB’s notice highlights that necessary instructions have already been dispatched to all banks and financial institutions to use the national identity card number obtained via the portal to assist customers in opening their accounts.
