'No other solution than mutual consensus'

KATHMANDU, May 1: The Unified CPN (Maoist) has called an indefinite nationwide strike from May 2. The shops have started shuttering up and there is a state of fear even while walking on the streets. The fear that has been put into people is rising by the day. Do you think Jana Andolan III will do any good to the country?[break]

MITHILA SHARMA, ACTOR

There is no other solution than mutual consensus for this ongoing political turmoil in the country. Who are we fighting against? What are these terrors for and what will happen tomorrow? We’re just left with so many questions and nobody to give us any concrete answer. When will we be free from this uncertain atmosphere? What did the Maoists do after winning the election a few years ago? Why did they even come to an election if chaos and battle was what they wanted in this country? How many protests are we still looking for?

These days it’s even scary to stay in your own residence. Whenever there’s a doorbell, I often get scared for there might be somebody at the door asking for donation, either politely or forcefully. All of us are going through a mental stress. It’s high time for the state, the government and all political leaders to answer these questions.

ARYAN SIGDEL, ACTOR

The term “Jana Andolan” is taken so lightly today. Nothing turns out good in this country. Why don’t these leaders understand that at the end of the day it’s the Nepali people who suffer and pay for their misdeed. It’s always we who are troubled and we often hang like a pendulum. Imagining peace and stability in the country is like imagining a mirage to be true. I have no clue when will this end. Will it ever? Will we ever get to see a new day with light and freedom? I know the answer – it’s a plain NO.

ABHAYA SUBBA, SINGER

It’s been almost seven years now and it’s still uncertain where the country is heading to. I see the Maoists as those lazy and greedy people who don’t want to earn anything on their own and are just looking to loot and rob others’ hard earned property. Donations are being collected from honest citizens of Nepal who work day and night to earn. They’re seeking shelter in people’s homes. If they come to my place, they will first have to befriend my aggressive dogs before they decide to stay in my house. I feel they are just using a tantrum to cause fear in people.

Definitely, it’s frustrating to realize how insecure we are in our own country. During these hassles, I however believe that young people like us should stay put and face the consequences because running away from Nepal is not the right solution. Not just in the cities, even people in rural Nepal are living in a difficult situation. Sadly, they even don’t have an option to fly abroad. The light of hope is still there and hopefully things will become better in the days to come. After every darkness, there is always a sunny day. I’m crossing my fingers and waiting for that morning to arrive.

TULSI GHIMIRE, FILMMAKER

To solve the current uncertainty in the political situation of the country, it’s obvious that there needs to be a battle. And I don’t think it’s any surprise that we’ve come to see this day. It had to happen sooner or later so that we could come to a concrete conclusion.

The winner is always one. Somebody has to lose. I don’t think there is going to be anything wrong; I don’t think this battle will bring any negative circumstances. It’s just that while fighting for peace and stability in the country, we should take care about maintaining law and order so we don’t end up being violent. After this battle, there will be a conclusion, for sure. It’s better to have something concrete than stand in a limbo. Let’s all prepare ourselves for both the worst and the best.

GANESH BHANDARI, FILMMAKER/MEMBER OF UNIFIED CPN-MAOIST

This mass protest is really necessary for the restructuring of the state. The country is in a crucial political state and we need something really concrete. In fact, all filmmakers and artistes need to support this protest so as to see a better Nepal tomorrow. I don’t think that the Maoists are forcing anybody to give them donations. They’re receiving money from those who are willingly helping them in this noble cause.

Conspiracies are built against the Maoists to fail them in their initiative. They are ready for a peaceful protest, provided the state doesn’t try to intervene. We haven’t threatened anyone. It’s just that people are fed rumors unnecessarily. The result of this battle will certainly be good for the people of Nepal. Let’s all be positive.
