KATHMANDU, Oct 11: An evaluation of the safety and quality of stocks of rice and pulse provided by UN World Food Program (WFP) in Nepal has shown that there is no scientific evidence to support allegations that WFP food supplies were the causes of diarrhea outbreak in mid-western hill districts.

According to the evaluation made by Dr Richard Fuchs of Natural Resources Institute (NRI), University of Greenwich in the UK, there is no correlation between the WFP food and diarrhea deaths. “Results show that moisture content and levels of micro-organisms were within acceptable limits, and therefore, the WFP supplied food is safe for human consumption,” said a statement issued by the NRI.

More than 64 samples of rice and pulses were taken from WFP stocks representing approximately 92 percent of WFP in-country stocks.
