KATHMANDU, Nov 9: The government has shown little interest to make the Centre for Nepal and Asian Studies (CNAS), Tribhuvan Univeristy, a truly international research center, said Professor Dr Yogyandra Adhikari, executive director of CNAS, on Wednesday.

He was speaking at a press conference organized to inform about a three-day international conference that CNAS is organising from Nov 15-17 in the capital. [break]

Social Science Methodology: A Special Reference to Social Movements is the topic for the conference.

Dr Adhikari said unfortunately the country has no research center for credible and quality research. And, the state of research activities at CNAS has improved little due to political interference and lack of adequate budget for research. "Not much academic activity is happening at Tribhuvan University. As a result, the country is facing several forms of conflicts and nobody knows how to resolve them," he said.

He, however, said that despite a resource-crunch, CNAS, with the support of Hiroshima University, Japan, and some international donor agencies, is holding a three-day international level conference from November 15. He further added that without their support, research works at CNAS would not have been possible at all.

Chief coordinator for the conference Dr Mrigendra Bahadur Karki echoed Dr Adhikari, saying that political instability has been a greater challenge for the country.

There are differences and similarities in Nepali society. No European or American theory is applicable here. So, the need of the hour is qualitative research activity that the country currently needs for formulating policies to deal with burning issues of the day, he explained.

Present during the press conference were the chairman of University Grants Commission Dr Ganeshman Gurung, senior social scientist Dr Surya Lal Amatya and readers, professors and research scholars of Tribhuvan University.

During the three-day conference, prominent soical scholars from over 10 countries will present their papers on social science research methods and methodology.
