KATHMANDU, Dec 26: “Khokana of Lalitpur district will be the starting point of the Kathmandu-Tarai Expressway, and this won’t be changed,” Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Raghubir Mahaseth said.

This decision was made during a meeting at the Army Headquarters two weeks ago, attended by Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli, former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Minister Mahaseth and Minister for Finance Yuba Raj Khatiwada. The meeting was organized by the army to review the progress of the project.

The decision is expected to invite further resistance from the locals who are claiming the project is damaging the cultural heritages of Khokana, an ancient settlement.

Meanwhile, Nepal Army has also demanded with the government extra allowance for its staff for the duties they are assigned on the expressway project. The government, however, is unlikely to provide additional incentives.
