The enraged family of the deceased and neighbors blamed the hospital for the baby's death and NMC responded by calling in the police to control the situation. The situation became tense and remained that way throughout the day.Father of the newborn, Akhil Singh of Jitpur in Bara district, alleged that the baby died as the delivery was carried out by beginner nurses.
Singh brought his wife Sumi to NMC on Saturday after she started going into labor. She delivered on Monday morning.
"While my wife writhed in pain inside the delivery ward, we waited outside for hours. At around 5:30 a.m., a sweeper came out of the ward and informed us that my wife had given birth to a baby boy," said Singh.
The family rejoiced but their joy could not last long. The newborn died shortly afterwards.
The Singh family said the baby died as the beginner nurses accidently made a hole in his head with a razor while carrying out the delivery.
Singh said the death occured as there was no doctor present.
When the family tried to meet the doctor responsible for the delivery, Dilip Sah, an official at the NNC administrative section, said that the hospital was not responsible and they could not meet the doctor.
"The hospital should tell us how the deceased baby sustained a head injury. The hospital is trying to settle matters by deploying police," said Singh.
Other services at the hospital were also affected after locals came into the premises, demanding a probe and action against the hospital.
Meanwhile, Keshav Raj Ghimire, chief district officer of Parsa district, said that the dead baby has been taken to Narayani Sub-regional Hospital for a postmortem. He maintained that necessary action would be taken on the basis of the postmortem report.
