Nine arrested on the charge of killing Bhutanese refugee

IIAM, Sept 23: Police have arrested nine persons on the charge of murdering Bhutanese refugee of Beldangi camp in Jhapa. The District Police Office, Ilam announced the arrest on Friday morning.

IIAM, Sept 23: Police have arrested nine persons on the charge of murdering Bhutanese refugee of Beldangi camp in Jhapa. The District Police Office, Ilam announced the arrest on Friday morning.


The victim has been identified as Lal Bahadur Gurung, 44, of Chulachuli Rural Municipality, Bukuwa, Illam. District Police Chief SP Dilip Ghimire informed Republica that Gurung was called near the Suspension bridge of Ratuwa River on the border of Jhapa and Ilam and was beaten to death. A group of 10/12 people attacked Gurung with knives and stones, cut his legs, knees and ankles before fleeing.

In connection with the incident, police have arrested  Shiv Hinghang, 25, Naresh Kumar Yakkha, 29, , Abhishek Kerung, 29, Seseyang Yakkha, 20, Santu, 33, Chandrakumar Yava, 35, Dumbar Yava, 35. Narendra Tumrok, 35, Vikram Hingmang, 26 (Nepali) and Parshu Rai, 29. The police said that they were arrested from different places as they were hiding to evade arrest.


According to the police, Gurung beat Sujan, the brother of Narendra Tumrok, known as Teeka, on September 18 and robbed him of Rs 2,000 in cash. SP Ghimire said that Gurung was killed by a group of local youths in revenge. 


According to police, locals also said that Gurung put them in trouble as he was allegedly involved in hooliganism in their locality. Gurung, who was seriously injured in the attack, was taken to Lifeline Hospital in Jhapa for treatment. The hospital declared him dead on October 21.
