KATHMANDU, Aug 5: The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday set free Nihita Biswas and Shakuntala Thapa, purported wife and mother-in-law respectively of convicted criminal Charles Sobhraj, in the presence of the SC Bar Association and Nepal Bar Association.

They have to reappear in court on Friday by 10 am. [break]

The two were taken into custody as Thapa´s statement in a contempt of court case could not be completed Wednesday. A division bench of Justices Balaram KC and Ram Kumar Prasad Sah had ordered their detention.

Recording of their statements has not yet been completed. The apex court on Thursday completed recording Thapa´s statement. The SC has already begun taking a statement from Nihitha.

The SC on Sunday ordered them to appear in court in three days after a contempt of court case was filed against them for lashing out against the justices who handed down the verdict against French national Charles Sobhraj. Both Thapa and her daughter have apologized to the apex court.

Reacting to the court verdict last Friday, Thapa, who is herself a lawyer, and Biswas had termed the justices, who upheld Sobhraj´s life-sentencing by lower courts, ´corrupt´ and ´biased´.
